An homage to the Type 109 Messerschmitt fighter plane, which was integrated into the German Luftwaffe starting in 1937.
At that time, it was the world's fastest propeller-driven airplane. As a base, the ME 108 "Taifun", which had a pressurized cabin, was selected.

On April 26, 1939, the Messerschmitt works pilot Fritz Wendel took his ME 209 V1 (D-INJR) to a top speed of 755,138 kph - a record that lasted for 30 years.
